Well, in my limited knowledge of things there's nothing in the disk-based
software side of the OS that defines how the machine reads from or writes
to a floppy drive. You should try something like booting without
startup-sequence or booting to OS2.04 floppies, and then check to see
whether or not the drive registers HD disks as HD.

Although it may be a complete coincidence, it's altogether possible that
something went wrong with your drive at the same time as you happened to be
upgrading your OS.
